A Sinner's Prayer

"A Sinner's Prayer" is one of the first pieces I penned when I began writing in my mid 20's. It still rings true today. I can sum it up in a sign that I read just the other day: “If you only pray to God only when you're in trouble, then you're in trouble.”
At the time I wrote this poem, I was just learning how to not allow the unhealthy or unlikeable things about myself to define who I was. That didn't mean that I could ignore those things or traits. It meant and still means dealing with myself truthfully. I am a sinner. I don't always do good, yet God loves me anyway. There is beauty and there is power in knowing that.
I haven't always done good and I haven't always listened to God. Sometimes, I listened to voices of instant gratification instead of those that advocated faith for the long haul. I catch myself still making that same mistake to lesser degrees. I don't beat myself up over it anymore. Instead, I thank God for the lesson and His illumination: that I at least do better than I did before.

A Sinner’s Prayer

God save me from myself-
  that is my constant prayer
as I dive deeper into myself
  into the unaware.

Into the sea of those
  who don’t know You,
  not because they can’t
  but because they won’t.

God, save me from myself
as I dive deeper into myself…

Into this comforting sea of sin
  that eagerly awaits me,
  that deceitfully soothes me
  as I loom impatiently-
Waiting for you to answer me.

Did I miss your call-
for me to come back home,
because I was so busy trying
to make it on my own?

I know that you will spare me
once again in this time of need
  that I have created
out of my own human errors
  and own evil ways.

You are ALL merciful!
It is You who holds tomorrow.
So it is with the deepest of faith
and the saddest of all sorrow.
that I call on You Lord, God
  to save me from myself...
  as I sin impatiently.

Regret, None

No one is perfect, not a single solitary one of us. We all make mistakes. It's up to us what we do with that mistake. Do we negatively internalize that mistake leading us to give up or become angry or bitter? Do we learn from that mistake so that we can become wiser and stronger instead?
The choice lies within the individual. Acknowledge your mistakes so that the lesson you learn from them can serve as the building blocks for a better life. Don't beat yourself up because that will do you no good. Confront your mistake and take its valuable lesson with you.

 Regret, None

Regret during troubling times
  does no one good
  except the devil.

Punishing self doubt figures prominently on all new decisions.

Can’t think with a heavy mind.
You’re at your best
  when you leave
  the mistake behind.

Just take the lesson with you.

You may have been warned,
  maybe severely scorned.
You may have been bad,
  would retract what you said.
You may have seen it coming
  but couldn't react
  to the warning.

There may have been, could have been
  many things
  that went down different.

Can’t question it now
  because you know
  deep down inside...

You made your choices for a reason.

Infinite Possibilities (The Failure to Define Me)

About This Poem

One of my favorite expressions is "Do You Boo!" I tell folks that all of the time and I mean it. As long as you're not hurting anyone else or impeding their life progress, then, by all means, DO YOU! Be true to yourself even when others don't get you.
I could have used more palatable words or phrases like “unique”, “different”, or “dance to the beat of my own drum”. I chose the word “crazy” because it is often assigned to people or ideas that others don't understand. It's easier for some to diminish other people's individuality rather than exploring or embracing their own.
You are the only YOU that God has ever created! You are the only one who is capable of living your life and pursuing your hopes and dreams. Everyone doesn't have to understand who or what you are. There are times when you may not even understand yourself and that's OK. We aren't meant to be static. It's natural that we grow and change.
So, do YOU and enjoy it!

Infinite Possibilities (The Failure to Define Me)

There is a failure to define me.

Let them call me crazy
if crazy allows me to be everything
  that my faith qualifies.
I seek places beyond my brief imagination.
Open your mind to gather God’s wonders.

Let them call me crazy
if crazy leads me to find happiness
  where others fail to look.
The weak seed cannot grow to potential
without a different way to love it.
Experience God’s boundless wisdom and mercy.

Let them call me crazy
if I get a little angry sometimes
  that my goals are reachable
yet I have not attained them,
that I don’t measure up to my own worth,
and I would rather die trying
  than to live settling
  for the world’s offer.
Understand the absoluteness of God.

Let them call me crazy
when they cannot comprehend this place
  that I have actualized-
  my own world,
   centered around God

Thirsty I searched.
Undeniably, I found.
Fathom my testimony.

Let them call me crazy
if crazy allows me to call on God
  endlessly and without shame,
now more often to praise Him
  when I call His name.

God is the same
  In trouble and in joy.
And I am justified.
Because of Him,

  explore my infinite possibilities.
