First Things First

About "First Things First"

This is a shorty but goody, one of my first pieces. It's straight and to the point about loving yourself. It's “First Things First” because before you can give or receive love, you must find and cultivate it within yourself. Self-love is not the same as self-absorption or self-centeredness. It does not require denying ugly or unwanted truths about ourselves. It is simply what the two words together imply, loving yourself.
It doesn't always come easy, especially when we are going through rough patches. It is something that we must take the time to do. We have to actively love on ourselves even if just to renew our spirits. We must love ourselves so that ultimately, we know how to love others well.
Love is what God is all about. After all, God is love. That in and of itself should tell us how important it is to our being. Love yourself, even when you don't always like yourself.

First Things First

I love myself!
I’m enamored with myself-
one of the best people I know!
Even when I can’t stand myself,
  I still love me so!

Self absorbed a little,
   vain a little more,
  pride is easily evident,
  yet confidence sometimes a chore.

I can’t offer love to anyone
if I can’t discern it first in me.
Self love should be priority,
  not heeded as conceit.

My faults are easily visible-
I can name more than you,
I still have to love myself
  regardless of what ensues.

If you don’t cherish yourself
  thoroughly enough
to savor the contents of this rhyme,
  life presents opportunity to change.

This testimony is mine.

Duality

About "Duality"

What truly motivates you? Are you more motivated by the achievement of something or are you more motivated by the prevention of loss? Are you moving towards something you desire or are you moving away from something unpleasant? Are you motivated by fear or by courage?
Though each posed question reflects opposite ends of our emotional spectrum, they are not necessarily or always mutually exclusive. Many times the reasons we do things can be influenced by both the pursuit of a positive as well as the prevention of a negative.
There is no need to choose between the two as long as the mission itself remains the chief focus. Often we as humans wrestle with this duality. We want to do things for the right reasons. It's because we know that the reason we do things is just as important as what we do.
When I struggle with my motivations, I turn to God. I ask Him to help me stay tuned into Him and His guidance. I ask that He give me the strength to properly deal with anything that hinders my alignment with Him. I pray that He helps me move beyond my human understanding to rely on His wisdom instead.
I refuse to let myself become immobilized by debilitating self-doubt. If I allowed that, then I would never accomplish anything. God created me and He knows me. He knows me right down to every strand of hair on my head. I trust Him to direct my path and to help me address anything, including myself, that presents issues along the way.

Duality

Ambition and anger,
  I am a two-headed beast.

Grounded firmly and steadily-
  stretching ahead of me
is a long and winding road,
  full of surprises,
  both good and bad,
  of which I callously chose.

I have nothing to lose
but what I have not had at all.
What good is life if I don’t fall?

Then I can’t get up-
  the pleasure of rising again
  after falling so hard
  almost takes away the bitterness.

Almost, so I keep striving again,
  being weighed down
by this two-headed beast that I am
but finding the energy and ability
  to again plunge forward
  and keep going…
Though not knowing for certain
if my so-called sacrifice will pay off.

What will I show for my life?
Hardship and strife,
   or peace and joy?

It is my choice
  and it is my right
to claim what is for me!

So,  angrily I survive,
  ambitiously I strive,
  being fueled
by this two-headed beast that I am-
wondering which will stand in the end.

No time nor need to worry now-
  my Master has a plan.

Role Reversal (Turn Pain Into Power)

All of us hurt. It's a natural part of being a living, feeling human. The longer we spend on earth, the chances increase that we will experience something so hurtful that we can not fathom how we will ever be the same. The truth is, there are some pains we will carry with us throughout our duration on this planet.
Time can help with our wounds but may never fully heal them. The question then becomes, What will you do will that lingering pain? You can allow the pain to change, control, or even consume you. You can deny the pain which can cause it to become toxic if it continues to fester.
What you do with your pain makes all the difference between being weighed down by it or flourishing despite it. I choose to turn my pain into power; to channel it for the purpose of good. It's never a simple task but I'd rather that my suffering become a source of power rather than remain a continued burden.

Role Reversal

Pain into power my hurt will turn...

a spiritual lesson is to be learned
  that obstacles increase my yearn
while being underestimated makes me burn.
Sorrow’s advance I constantly spurn.
My faith holds me steady and firm.
Pain into power, my will shall turn.

Power will come from my pain...
no more ground will my enemy gain
by my intent not being made plain.
My way to the kingdom I wish to gain
and I can’t do that by remaining the same
so I call unto Jesus’ name...
What we gonna do with this pain?

Pain power let us make it into...
don’t forget that life is time God lends you,
that’s why the enemy wants to win you
so far apart from God he can send you.
His purpose is to do more than just bend you.
He wants for himself the gifts God gives you.
What better than power to make pain into?

Turn your pain into power...
  manage its caustic showers.
Under its duress dare not you cower,
for you know who’s waiting to devour
souls that by suffering have been soured.
Your faith is an invincible tower-
from that source, build your power.

I want to help uplift, inspire and empower others and to help leave the world a little better than I found it. I am an author, deep thinker & optimist. I know God is love. I am the author of "Candidreams: I Remember the Beginning" and "Role Reversal: Turn Pain Into Power".
It is never my intent to push my spiritual views on others. I'm just sharing some of my own story in hopes that you or someone else will gain from it and can find some strength and hope in it.  As I am fond of saying:  I'm just giving you a little personal information and insight. What you do with it is completely up to you!
